Survivorship Bias

An eBay seller claims that his products are rated 5 stars in reviews. He is a seller of parachutes.

Survivorship bias is the logical error of concentrating on the people or thing that made it past some selection process and overlooking those that did not, typically because of their lack of visibility.

Examples:

  • Cats who fall from less than 6 stories have greater injuries than cats who fall from higher; Cats killed in higher falls are less likely to be brought to a veterinarian.
  • An interviewer asks if everyone on the train was able to buy the ticket successfully.
  • Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison were all dropoffs in College.
  • Pre-screening sample on people with certain traits that would benefit the data gathering in order to produce a biased result.
